What do I need to get into a ProRide course?

You need to have a BC Class 6L or 8L motorcycle learner’s license, which can be attained at any ICBC Driver Services Centre. Please be aware that in order for ICBC to conduct the final road test, you need to have had your learners' license for a minimum of 30 days before your final road test assessment. In other words, you may participate in a ProRide course with a class 6 or 8 learner’s license even if you’ve only had it for a few days, but you must have had it for 30 days prior to your ICBC final road test. Tuition must be paid in full upon registration.

What’s on the Class 6L learner’s license test, and where’s the nearest location?

Test highlights

  • contains 40 multiple-choice questions (usually taken on a computer)
  • tests your understanding of material in the ICBC driving manual RoadSense for Riders (free at any ICBC location) or click here for online manual.
  • questions are designed to require thinking and understanding, not just memorized facts
  • takes about half an hour (but you can take longer)
  • can be taken in English, French, Cantonese, Mandarin and Punjabi

To take the test, go to your nearest driver licensing office. No appointment is necessary. Bring ID.

Motorcycle knowledge test fee: $15. If you pass, your Class 6L license will cost $10. If you don't pass the test, you can come back another day and take it again. You will have to pay the $15 fee again.

What tests do I need to pass to get my full license?

You need to pass a motorcycle knowledge test (given by ICBC) to get your BC class 6L/8L (learner’s) license.

You need to pass a Motorcycle Skills Assessment (MSA) test, done midway through your course on the ProRide lot.

At the end of your ProRide training, you take the ICBC final road test, which we setup for you, then you're done!

If you don’t have a BC driver’s license, the process is a bit longer. Click here to learn more.

Will ProRide arrange for my Motorcycle Skills Assessment (MSA) and final road test or will I have to book my own through ICBC?

Yes, we will arrange your MSA test and final road test. We’ll take care of all the bookings for you - simply tell us when you can make it, and we’ll arrange all the rest. Please be aware we assess your MSA (slow speed) test onsite midway through your course.

We ride rain or shine! We supply full-body raingear, free of charge.

What is your pass rate on the final road test?

What if I fail the road test?

You can re-book through us for a following week. Please be aware that ICBC does charge $50 per final road test.

What if I can't make the course at the last minute or have to cancel?

The registration fee is fully refundable with two weeks notice, subject to a $35 administration fee.

What if I miss a class?

Students CANNOT miss any class time during the course. If an emergency situation arises during the course, it may be possible to make up lost time when an opening is available.

What about refunds?

Refunds will not be given to students who are unable to continue in the course for any reason. These reasons include, but are not limited to: missing classes, dropouts, excessive lateness, being a danger to themselves or others, horseplay, or injury.

Is training hard?

Yes, it is physically and mentally demanding and something to be taken seriously. At the same time, it is very fulfilling and gratifying to accomplish your goal, and you'll have a blast doing it! Be sure to be rested for your course. Try to hold off on any partying or big celebrations during your course; learning with a hangover doesn’t work so well!

I have never ridden a motorcycle in my life. Will I have any problems?

NO, but you will have challenges. You do need to realize that learning to ride a motorcycle can be physically and mentally demanding. It is something to be taken seriously. Experience with bicycle riding and/or driving a standard-shift car is a major bonus.

What type of gear do I need for the course or will you provide it?

We’ll supply you with leather gloves, raingear, full face helmets, safety vests and 2008/2001 motorcycles. All you need is a jacket, (leather, denim/jean or textile/kevlar) and proper footwear such as work boots or hiking boots. Please refrain from steel-toed boots for your training course, as you could have difficulty feeling the shifter lever. Your footwear should cover your ankle, this will help protect you from a hot exhaust pipe and help support your ankle in case of a tip-over. We also have a few extra motorcycle jackets if needed.

How often does the course run?

Courses start every Thursday night, every week.

How many students are in each class?

We cap each class at 10 students.

Can I use my own motorcycle for the road test?

Yes, you may use your own bike for the final road test if you prefer.

Can I use my own motorcycle and gear for the course?

You cannot use your own motorcycle for the course but you may use your own gear. We suggest if you already have your own helmet, jacket or gloves, that you should bring them.

Does this course guarantee me a motorcycle license?

No, nobody is legally allowed to guarantee you your license. As long as you are safe, we will continue to work with you until you have attained your license. If you don't give up, we won't either. We don’t leave anyone behind.
